A means to a shelter
Photo series, Lebanon, 2017 - ongoing
A means to a shelter is a photo series, which aims to explore the visual narrative and linguistic landscape in a Syrian refugee camp in Lebanon.
The series focuses on how leftovers or donated advertising tarps used for makeshift tents create alternative narratives for advocacy. Beyond the practicality of the tents, the advertisements juxtapose ironically with the refugees’ context to create almost coincidental graffiti, eliciting the realities of refugee conditions or perhaps protesting on it.
The series highlights how the tents go beyond being just ‘a means to a shelter’, offering signs of belonging and resilience, and anchors to dream of better homes and better life.
صنع في المانيا Made in Germany has been exhibited as part of an International Exhibition Transitions and Displacement in 2020 by Loosenart at Millepiani, Rome, Italy.
The series and how it was developed was selected to be included as a chapter in On the move! Migration and the Politics of Movement in the Global South book which will be published by the American University of Cairo in 2021.
